In volume 5, we look at the general scene at the end of the 1910s and the emergence of the commercial recording industry, which put vaudeville artists like Mamie Smith, Ethel Waters and others on the map. We show how the recording boom benefited from the notoriety of an immensely popular show called Shuffle Along.
