Co-operative and mutual enterprise is one of the oldest and most enduring forms of business, encompassing co-operatives, mutual firms, friendly societies, and credit unions. Governments around the world have encouraged the development of co-operative and mutual enterprises (CMEs), yet relatively little attention has been given to them within the mainstream business and economics research literature.
